The History of Lee Motor Company of Evergreen, Atmore, & Andalusia, AL
From February 25th, 1925 to today, our dealership continues to grow and evolve. However, our culture and core goal remains the seam — to treat everyone fairly and provide a world-class car buying experience. Take a quick journey with us from then to now to explore the Lee Motor Company History.
On February 25th, 1925, John T. Lee Sr. decided to start Lee Motor Company New Sales and Service Inc. in Frisco City, Alabama – which was then called Jones Mill. A Ford dealership was purchased when the previous dealer was terminated for discounting a vehicle by $5.00. The dealership continued to function as a Ford dealership from 1925 through 1933.
In May of 1933, John Lee ended his Ford franchise in favor of Chevrolet Motor Division. At the time, Lee Motor Company operated in both Jones Mill and Monroeville. Four years later in 1937, Buick vehicles were added to the lineup, and the dealership moved to its present location at 31 S Alabama Ave, Monroeville.
Later in 1941, the Frisco City operation was closed permanently. After being passed on to J.T. Lee Jr in 1961, he passed the dealership onto his son — Tommy Lee — in 1982.
By 1985, Dodges, Plymouths, and Chryslers were being offered at Lee Motor Company. Then Lee Motor Company underwent a series of changes:
- In 1994, the dealership acquired Pontiac
- In 1997, Oldsmobile was acquired
- In 1998, Jeep was acquired
- In 2001, GM ended the Oldsmobile franchise
Shortly thereafter, Lee Motor Company negotiated with GM for the GMC Truck franchise after terminating its franchises with DaimlerChrysler. In December 2013, Lee Motor Company was purchased by Rusty Sibley and father and son pair, John Crum Sessions and John Henry Sessions.
